The oil cooler assembly consists of a finned core and collector housing that contains passages that direct the flow of oil to be cooled between the air passages. The housing is a casting which is brazed to the core. Oil flows through the passages in the core transferring heat through the walls of the passages to the air flowing across the air fins.
IN and OUT oil ports are located on top of the oiler cooler. The IN port was machined per MS33649-8. The OUT port was machined per MS33649-10. A bypass relief valve is installed on the housing between the IN and OUT ports. The bypass valve will operate if the oil passages become clogged or oil viscosity is high due to low temperatures and oil pressure drop across the core overcomes spring pressure. This opens valve and directs oil flow from IN port through valve and to OUT port. This causes most of the oil to bypass the cooler core.
